Father’s Day – Fatherhood Buzz – “Celebrating Dads”

On Saturday, June 14, 2014, Horizon Outreach participated in President Barack Obama’s National Fatherhood Buzz Event. More than 270 barbershops and local community agencies across the country joined together to celebrate Fatherhood Buzz, an initiative coordinated by the US Department of Health and Human Services’ National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse, as part of President Obama’s Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative. The event was held at Freeman’z Barber Shop, where owner Mr. Kevin Freeman and his master were onsite to cut hair for both fathers and their sons. Discounts were offered for military fathers and sons. In addition, Fathers and sons received information on affordable healthcare options, local resources; and goodies for the children. Furthermore, the fathers were celebrated with food, entertainment and discounts to local family events to celebrate Father’s day with their families on Father’s Day Weekend.

Fathers and sons were able to have their pictures taken and given the opportunity to talk about fatherhood and what their children/fathers meant to them. The barbers of Freeman’s barbershop also spoke on fatherhood. Below are a few snippets of conversations from the fathers.

“It feels good giving back to the community and giving back to dads.” Master Barber - John Penigar

“Whenever I need someone to talk to my uncle Adrian is there for me. I appreciate everything he has done for me. I Love You.” Nathan Tinsley – Son

“I love being a father. It’s one of the greatest feelings in the world.” Father - David Williams

“Some men have it confused. They think you have to pay child support…. That is not true. You must give a child support.” U.S. Army Veteran - Melvin Dew
